How it all started

I was taught how to crochet when I was 12 years old by my aunt and great aunt. I crocheted mainly blankets as a big square was pretty simple. I found cross stitch at 15 and really didn't pick up my hooks again until 2002 when my Mother In Law asked if I knew anyone that crocheted.

My passion for crochet was reignited. I made a blanket, sweater and hat set times 2 as both of my sister in laws were due to have little girls just weeks apart. I may not have started crocheting again had it not been for them. There were a lot of nights on the phone with my aunt as I had only crocheted squares....Needless to say after several months the girls looked adorable in their sweater sets and blankets.

I found that trying to learn how to crochet other shapes was actually kinda fun, so I started going to the library and checking out books on crochet. I became enthralled with thread crochet and made several dollies and table runners that my mom still proudly displays.

I started to get people asking if I made other things. While it started off really slow, eventually I was getting quite a few people interested in my items. I started wondering if it was something worth selling..... insert light bulb....at this point it was turned on though because I couldn't find the light switch. That was until I saw a friends post on Facebook about Etsy. After several long, probably annoying, messages I set up my very own Etsy shop. I began purchasing patterns and crocheting like a mad woman. The room was suddenly bright and the switch was on. I opened my shop on January 6th 2012. It hasn't taken off as well as I hoped but I know that it is a process. I have had several orders, 3 to Australia, which was surprising to me that I would reach that far, but the majority of my orders still come from friends, family and coworkers.

I hope that one day my passion can become my entire source of income, until that day though I will continue to try to reach potential buyers through Etsy, Facebook, Twitter, and my blog. So feel free to share this blog post with your friends, and hope on over to my Etsy shop, Facebook page or follow me on Twitter @ MelIsCrafty.

Happy crafting, never stop following your dreams!

My Crazy Life....

So life got a little crazier in the last few months. My last post asked if I could make money at doing what I love. The simple answer is yes! People have been steadily ordering my items, mostly private sales but I do have some Etsy orders. Still trying to figure a few things out. Many items have lots of looks but no sales. So my fingers have been working overtime to stay on track.

That's only one thing. We are either crazy or really love animals because we adopted two, yes TWO, puppies! Gracie Lynn is 10 weeks old and Zoey Lynn is 8 weeks old. They are crazy animals but so much fun. If you've ever had a puppy though you know that having a puppy is like having a newborn. Their bladders are so small that I'm up most of the night to take them out every 3 hours. Can you say lack of sleep!

On top of that I interviewed to be a crochet instructor at JoAnn Fabrics and got it so May 12th I'll be teaching people my stress reliever, hoping they find one of their own. Along with that today I starting to design my first pattern! I'm hoping that everyone likes it and that it turns out. Going to do some more research on crochet pattern design.

My life is crazy and chaotic but I wouldn't change it for anything! With that it's time to get back at!

Happy Easter to all!
